I have always been intrigued with smocking and in addition to improving my hand sewing I decided to sit down and learn how to do it. Here is one of the links I found that I used to help me start: http://www.mariegracedesigns.com/marie_grace/2009/03/handpleating-fabric-tutorial.html So following her tutorial I made the sample (plus tested a few other stitches) and it wan’t half bad! I’m not sure I’m up to the task, but here is a dress from about 1893-94 that has smocking from the Victoria and Albert Museum :
